Tour Overview and Waypoints* –
- The starting point of this hill walking tour is on Zagreb’s Main Square behind the Horseman statue. You will start your quest and head up to the tunnel from here.
- Walking through the tunnel will bring you to the western side of Gradec Hill, where you will look for the Statue of Man.
- When you find this statue at the beginning of Park Forest Tuškanac, you will know that the first climb is ahead. There are a few possible paths to climb up, any will do to get you to the observatory.
- As you approach the medieval tower now transformed into a planet observatory, take a moment to enjoy the view and imagine how many generations have walked these streets.
- From the observatory, walk down the street to the plateau. One of the most fabulous vistas Zagreb can offer
- Take the starways down from the plateau and go through the portal of eternal happiness. You have reached the promenade; follow it to the Lotršćak tower.
- After enjoying more cityscapes around the Lotršćak tower, walk into the center of Gradec Hill, famous St. Mark’s Square.
- The next stop is the East Gates of Gradec Hill, also known as the Stone Gates. Here you can pray for world peace.
- As you leave Gradec Hill, find Mlinske stairs and walk down
- As soon as you get down to the vibrant Tkalča street, find another set of stairs, the Ghost stairs. Walk through another portal to reach the serenity of Kaptol Hill.
- Leave the park behind and ramble towards the Dolac market, where a good bargain is easy to find
- From Dolac, you will easily find your way to the Cathedral, the central point of the Kaptol Hill.
- Probably closed due to renovation, the Cathedral will still be a good point of orientation, as you will now circle Kaptol Hill. Walk towards the crossroads.
- Close to the crossroads is the entrance to the park, known as The Fishpond.
- Walk down the park and notice the remains of walls that once surrounded the entire Kaptol Hill.
- After you leave the park called the Fishpond, head up to the Europski square, and notice a star on the ground.
- The last stop is at the Manduševac fountain on the Main Square. On this square, the tour started, and now it ends. Yet the story of Zagreb began here, where the city got its name.
*—Remember that smartphone navigation could mislead you from some waypoints to others, as some paths and the tunnel are often not marked as route options. Use your senses well, or book a guided tour. Unlike Kaptol Hill, Gradec Hill has many names, like Grič, Gornji Grad, or, in English translation, The Upper Town.
